Ethics and safety

In compliance with UK’s Human Tissue Act of 2004, for our DIY biology experiments we only use our own personal genomic DNAs and we do not obtain biological samples from other people for DNA analysis. Also in compliance with UK’s regulatory network, at this stage we do not perform genetic modifications. We will seek official GM licensing in case we plan genetic engineering experiments.

At OpenGenX we value our own safety, the public safety, and environmental safety. We do not work with pathogens and we will never, ever work with pathogens or attempt to make some. We comply with the DIY biology ETHICAL CODE that was agreed upon by the community in 2011. Here is a set of values that we follow based on the DIYbio code:

Transparency: we emphasize transparency and the sharing of ideas, knowledge, data and results.

Safety: we adopt safe practices.

Open Access: we promote citizen science and decentralized access to biotechnology.

Education: we help educate the public about biotechnology, its benefits and implications.

Modesty: we know you can’t know everything.

Community: we carefully listen to any concerns and questions and respond honestly.

Peaceful Purposes: we use biotechnology only for peaceful purposes.

Respect: we respect humans and all living systems.

Responsibility: we recognize the complexity and dynamics of living systems and our responsibility towards them.

Accountability: we remain accountable for our actions and for upholding this code.
